On International Women’s Day on the 8th of March, it’s time to celebrate! We share with you the best eyewear labels by women and for women. Two brands in particular stand out here: Yalea and Brendel Eyewear. Haven’t heard of them yet? Then it’s definitely time you should, because both brands not only impress with their trend sense and flattering eyewear shapes for women, they also have strong stories to tell.
Yalea – Inspired by Female Strength and Beauty
Yalea’s claim may sound a little pompous, but in a nutshell, it’s simply about creating Yalea glasses and Yalea sunglasses that have a modern, timeless aesthetic, and at the same time represent ethical principles that women (and certainly many men) around the world can identify with. Each model is inspired by female role models from world history – including sportswomen, politicians, actresses, researchers and musicians.
One of these strong women is the Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee. She founded the Women of Liberia Mass Action of Peace alliance, which was instrumental in ending the Second Liberian Civil War in 2003 without further violence. In 2011, Gbowee received the Nobel Peace Prize. Her SYA034H sunglasses combine the wild beauty of Liberia and cool urbanity in a round shape with geometric details.
The highly decorated actress Maggie Cheung from Hong Kong is well known for the films In the Mood for Love and Clean. In 2004, she was the first woman from Asia to win the acting award at the Cannes Film Festival. Dedicated to her, the slim metal frame VYA013L with two-tone details and acetate temples reflects the finesse and elegance of the actress.
Steffi Graf should be a household name to all tennis fans in the world. The exceptional German athlete was number one in the world rankings for 377 weeks, won 22 Grand Slam titles and in 1988 all four Grand Slams within one year plus Olympic gold and thus the so-called Golden Slam. This lifetime achievement remains unbeaten to this day. Her Yalea sunglasses model SYA033H captivates with timeless elegance and a round shape with exquisite colour gradient.
The name Sanna Marin is also worth remembering: the 36-year-old woman has been Prime Minister of Finland since 2019 – making her not only the youngest president in Finland’s history, she was also the youngest head of government in the world when she took office. Dedicated to this strong woman, Yalea’s VYA021V glasses are both tough and intellectual thanks to their angular shape with a hint of a horn pattern, while the colour gradient adds an extra twist.
Brendel Eyewear – Frames with Fashion Appeal
At Brendel Eyewear, the focus is less on a tribute to individual women and more on a tribute to femininity itself. Because Brendel glasses and Brendel sunglasses from the Nuremberg-based manufacturer are not only made for women, they are also designed by a design team made up entirely of women. The motto at Brendel is “fashion for the face”. The glasses are inspired by international fashion trends but never seek to be ephemeral – they are marked by traditional craftsmanship and know-how.
In the current collection, Brendel Eyewear focuses strongly on feminine and minimalist styles with a free-spirited attitude. The result is elegant designs that speak for themselves with understated sophistication. Those who want something a little showier will also find something to suit them with this brand.
One thing is clear: to achieve true equality for girls and women, all role models are important, male as well as female, that strengthen self-confidence and teach us how rich and free all our lives can be. Whether strong women from everyday life, social media or figures from history. And if at seemingly unrelated things, like a new pair of sunglasses, get us talking about such topics, all the better!
