Savoir-vivre becomes savoir-voir in the blink of an eye when it comes to Chopard eyewear - because Chopard glasses are not only true pieces of jewellery for our faces, they also help us to see clearly. The jewellery-like designs by Chopard is no coincidence because the brand has been responsible for luxury watches and top-class goldsmithing for more than 150 years. Chopard glasses and, of course, Chopard sunglasses convey both a love of craftsmanship and an unmistakeable sense of style.
In 1860, Louis-Ulysse Chopard founded a watch manufactory for chronometers and pocket watches and set it up in the middle of the Swiss Jura in Sonvilier. His speciality: ultra-flat pocket watches that looked elegant and functional and were not as heavy in the waistcoat pocket as competitors' products. Under his son Paul-Louis, the company eventually moved to the Swiss watch mecca in Geneva. The period after the Second World War was difficult for the family business, and Paul-André Chopard, the grandson of the founder, was plagued by worries of succession: none of his children saw their future in watchmaking, and Paul-André still had to run the business himself at the age of 80.
When Paul-André Chopard gets an offer from the Pforzheim watchmaker Karl Scheufele III, his enthusiasm was great: the two men hit it off right away, they shared common values and a similar vision for the company. The sale went quickly, and in 1963 Chopard became German. Under Scheufele's aegis, Chopard developed into an internationally renowned brand that is still in family hands today. Scheufele's children Caroline and Karl-Friedrich share the creative and business parts equally. It was Caroline who initiated her own jewellery line in the 1980s - with resounding success. In 1997, Caroline Scheufele immortalised herself in another way: the designer created a new version of the Golden Palm, the winner's trophy of the Cannes Film Festival, made of 24-carat gold and a hand-cut rock crystal. The jewellery line was followed by accessories and fragrances, as well as eyewear and sunglasses. Nice to know: Chopard is one of the very few goldsmith companies that has been using only ethically and environmentally friendly mined gold and diamonds for several years.
In 2004, the company launched its first eyewear collection together with De Rigo Vision. De Rigo also entrusts Escada, Nina Ricci or Carolina Herrera, among others, with their eyewear lines. Chopard's eyewear is characterised by a high glamour factor, the highest quality standards and sophisticated elegance. High-quality materials symbolise luxury, while slim metal frames like the modern panto shape of the VCHC77M give Chopard glasses an urban look. Of course, the collections also include plastic frames in fashionable colours like soft Havana or smoky blue, as well as geometrically inspired frame-shapes which are style must-haves.
What all Chopard Eyewear frames have in common is that they are never simple and never ultra-simple. Small details and decorative elements such as ornaments integrated into the temple or chiselled metal borders on the browline act as eye-catchers and give each frame that special look for which the brand is known all over the world. Classic black rectangle modelsare given an extravagant twist with golden elements, and even rimless styles draw the eye stringently to Chopard's exquisite craftsmanship with gemstones and golden temples.
