About Kenzo

Kenzō Takada - the Tiger Among Fashion Designers

Founder of Kenzo and designer of beautiful Kenzo glasses and sunglasses, Kenzō Takada's talents brought him from Japan to Paris and eventually to fashion shows around the world. Born in Japan in 1939, he did not have an easy path. Even as a young boy, he leafed through his sister's fashion magazines and liked what he saw in them. So it was a logical consequence that at the age of 19 he decided to study fashion design at the renowned Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo, where he was the first male student to lay the most important building block for his career.

A few years later in 1964, he took another big step and chose Paris as his new hometown - probably the best place in the world when it comes to fashion. After an initial struggle due to financial difficulties, the fashion tiger finally managed to open his own boutique six years later thanks to dogged ambition. His first fashion show was a sensational success. Takada founded the KENZO brand, landed on the cover of the magazine ELLE and thus reached the fashion Olympus.

As one of the few non-French designers (and the first Japanese designer ever) in Paris, Takada's good sense of colour and pattern made his first collection KENZO Women a breakthrough long before Yōji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake and Rei Kawakubo. This was followed by the KENZO Men's, KENZO Perfume and KENZO Homewear collections. His style struck a nerve in the cluttered eighties and had established itself as a classic in the then aesthetically more reduced nineties. Thus, in the course of the late 20th century, the KENZO brand became a household name all over the world and Takada became a legend.

Legends Never Die

As Kenzo Takada was considered a trendsetter and innovative fashion and perfume maker, he was heavily involved in many creative projects, collaborating with young artists and drawing inspiration from the colourful world of fashion and art. In 1993, the successful company was sold to the luxury goods group LVMH and at the end of the 1990s, Takada took his final leave from the fashion stage. Ten years later, the star designer Antonio Marras was hired as creative director for the women's line, who, as a self-taught designer, had already presented collections under his own name since 1988. Under his leadership, things were quieter at KENZO until 2011.

Since being replaced by designers Humberto Leon and Carol Lim from the Opening Ceremony brand in 2011, the fashion company has experienced a resurgence of young, fresh design. Since then, the successful fusion of emphatically simple cuts inspired by the traditions of Japan and intense prints with eye-catching floral patterns has made KENZO's designs so unique. The casual essentials such as sweatshirts and T-shirts with the famous, colourful tiger head as a large front print are particularly sought-after. But shoes and accessories such as bags and caps are also repeatedly adorned with the KENZO tiger and the KENZO eye, turning the little extras into real eye-catchers. All inspired by and true to the legendary designer.

Kenzo Glasses Styles

In keeping with the spirit of the designer and founding father, glasses by KENZO are also colourful and intense. KENZO women's glasses in bold colours like red and blue catch the eye and reflect the courage of Kenzo Takada. Their cat eye glasses are also among the extravagant models in the Kenzo eyewear collection and add an extra touch of femininity to any outfit. In addition to classic versions in black with thick full rims or thin metal frames, there is also a choice of transparent frames, which blend in with the colour of the face but stand out at the same time thanks to their transparent frames.
