Fashion is not necessarily about labels. It's not about brands. It's about something else that comes from within you.
Ralph Lauren may have launched a billion-dollar brand with an iconic logo, but he has always remained a philanthropist at heart. For the designer, values such as self-confidence, mindfulness or respect are not just words (even if his quotes adorn numerous motivational calendars), he supports educational institutions for children, donates large amounts of money to cancer research and makes many people happy, not least through his clothing designs. As one of the Ralph Lauren labels, Polo tailors to sporty-chic styles and of course includes the famous Polo glasses and sunglasses, which you can shop here.
Perhaps Ralph Lauren's humble mindset is because he himself is living the classic American Dream - not from rags to riches, but from department stores' tie salesman to one of the richest fashion designers on the planet. "Anything is possible, I'm living proof," he says proudly. In 2018, Lauren even became the first US designer to be knighted by the British Queen - something no one before him would have thought possible.
But the Ralph Lauren story began quite modestly. He was born under the name Ralph Lifshitz in New York in 1939. Even in his school days, he sold ties to his classmates and bought himself smart suits from the profits. He began to study economics, but was quickly expelled due to poor grades. After his military service, he therefore began to work as a simple salesman. At that time, there was no talk of a billion-dollar empire, but Lauren was not deterred: he persuaded his boss at the Beau Brummel manufactory to let him design his own line of ties. This was immensely successful and enabled him to set up his own business in New York in 1967 with a loan of 50,000 dollars.
The attitude to life that Ralph Lauren served with his fashion was by no means new at the time: tea in front of the fireplace in the ultra-rich Hamptons, preppy college outfits - the clothes of the American rich and famous were imitated by many fashion labels at the time. But Ralph Lauren gave the preppy look a twist all of its own: a little more waist here, fresher colours there, thus turning the old classics into a modern interpretation with which the students of the elite universities could set themselves apart from their traditional role models. A visit to a polo match had a great influence on Ralph Lauren's design process: the society lifestyle with the muscular horses and the ladies with the big hats fascinated the young entrepreneur. In 1972, the polo shirts with the embroidered polo player were launched - a signature piece that became world-famous in no time at all and can probably be found in most men's dresser drawers today.
The breakthrough as a high-end designer came in 1974 with the Oscar-winning dresses that Ralph Lauren tailored for Robert Redford and Mia Farrow in the classic film "The Great Gatsby". In a very short time, the single men's line became grew to become an empire, which now also encompasses women's fashion, jewellery, furnishings and fragrances. The creative genius's brands include the labels Lauren by Ralph Lauren, the pure eyewear line Ralph by Ralph Lauren and the sportswear line Polo Ralph Lauren.
The elite American universities are all about sports, so it's no surprise that the Polo Ralph Lauren line, with its sporty college appeal, is enjoying great success there. Cable knit cricket jumpers with a large V-neck and crest patch, trench coats, checked jackets, printed caps and jumpers and of course shirts, shirts, shirts - this is the successful mix of the collections.
